Laser Hair Removal FAQs: How to Get Smooth Legs by Summer
Here in the land of endless summer, any time is a good time to think about how to live your best life. With temperatures already rising ahead of spring, it’s easy to daydream about beach vacations, pool days, and sundresses. What’s not so nice to think about is all the shaving, waxing, and plucking you may have to do to feel confident when that time comes. But laser hair removal can change that.
American women spend more than $10,000 on shaving in their lifetimes—or up to $23,000 on waxing. Men aren’t far behind, contributing more and more to the billion-dollar hair removal industry every year. This constant investment of time and money is why so many people are turning to lasers as a permanent solution to unwanted hair.
But there are still many questions about this process. Thankfully, the expert team at ALo Medical is here to answer your most pressing questions about this next-level hair removal method.
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser device works by precisely targeting the pigments (colors) in your hair with light energy. The pigments in the hair follicles absorb this light as heat, which destroys the hair follicle. Using different wavelengths of light, we can target hair on multiple skin tones safely, without damaging anything but the hair shaft, follicle, and bulb.
Over the course of multiple treatments, we can remove hair in many areas, including:
- Face and neck (lip, chin, etc.)
- Underarms
- Bikini area
- Legs
- Chest
- Back
How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?
To get the best results, we typically recommend a course of six treatments. The exact number will depend on the area you’d like to treat and your unique body. Everyone is different, and there are many biological factors that can affect the number of treatments you’ll need.
In general, you can expect:
- Full legs: 6 to 12 sessions
- Bikini: 5 to 10 sessions
- Underarms: 3 to 4 sessions
- Back: 5 to 7 sessions
- Face and neck: 6 to 8 sessions
- Chest: 5 to 7 sessions
How long does laser hair removal take?
Individual sessions usually take an hour or less—longer for larger areas of the body. We usually recommend 4 to 6 weeks in between these sessions. So, if you have a goal in mind—like a wedding or vacation—be sure to start several months in advance.
That said, you may start noticing early results as soon as your first treatment. The hair will begin to grow back thinner and slower from the very first session onward.
We may also change the frequency of appointments based on your body and treatment area. In fast-growth areas like the lip, we may recommend treatments once per month. For slower growth areas like the back, you may only need treatment every other month.
What do I do before laser hair removal?
During your consultation at ALo Medical, we’ll start by examining your skin and providing a list of pre-treatment instructions. In general, we recommend:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least one month
- Avoid skincare products with harsh chemicals like glycolic acid and retinol for two or three days
- Shave the night before or morning of your appointment, but don’t wax, tweeze, or pluck the hair for a week beforehand
- Clean and exfoliate the skin before treatment, but don’t apply any lotions, makeup, or other products
Does at-home laser hair removal work?
Here’s our take on at-home laser hair removal devices: they may help a few people a little bit, but they’re not nearly as effective, safe, or diverse as treatment from a trusted cosmetic provider. Results are inconsistent at best, and side effects could be dangerous at worst. These at-home devices are flat-out unsafe for people with darker skin and are ineffective for people with light skin and light hair.
Furthermore, the devices you’ll find on social media are not scrutinized at the same level as the medical-grade equipment in a med spa environment. They’re much less powerful and difficult to wield over large areas. All in all, they’re likely to be even more of a waste of your time and money than shaving and waxing already have been.
Is getting laser hair removal worth it?
We certainly think so! If you’re tired of the constant battle to remove unwanted hair, soothe irritated skin, and combat ingrown hairs, laser treatments could be perfect for you. It’s been estimated that women spend 40 minutes or more on shaving each week, and even more time and money on waxing appointments. Break the cycle and achieve smoother, less irritated skin with laser hair removal!
