Everything You Need to Know About Preventative Botox®

For most of us, fine lines and wrinkles start to form around the age of 25. This is a critical juncture in your aging process where skin damage outpaces the production of elastin and collagen—two structural proteins responsible for skin health, texture, and tightness.

To prevent aging skin, some of us maintain a dedicated, at-home skincare routine. We may even eat better, exercise, and apply sunscreen frequently to protect our skin. But as hard as we try to stop them, wrinkles are inevitable. Thankfully, with a little help from the world’s #1 cosmetic injectable, you can delay them significantly.

These days, people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are using Botox® differently. Rather than correcting existing wrinkles, preventative Botox delays the formation of those wrinkles to begin with. Here’s how.

What is Preventative Botox?

Botox was first approved by the FDA as a cosmetic injectable back in 2002. In the two decades since, the neuromodulator has become a household name. Worldwide, tens of millions of people count on Botox to lightly stun the facial muscles responsible for the development or worsening of fine lines and wrinkles. But the more Botox was used, the more we started to realize that it may have other applications.

Over the years, providers and patients started to notice that regular users needed fewer injections as time went on. When the effect was studied, it was discovered that Botox had a way of training facial muscles to underreact, limiting the potential for common wrinkles from the start. In other words, the more you use Botox, the less you need it.

Preventative Botox was born, and younger patients started scheduling regular appointments.

When Should I Start a Preventative Botox Routine?

Since wrinkles start to form at the age of 25, ideal patients are in their early, mid, or late 20s. That said, patients in their 30s and 40s can also benefit significantly. The earlier you start, the better your outcomes. But waiting too long can make certain forms of skin damage more difficult to correct with Botox alone.

Skin damage comes in all shapes and sizes. Environmental damage from air pollution can have a drastic effect, as can simple photoaging, caused by overexposure to UV radiation. Lifestyle choices (like smoking tobacco) certainly play a role. And of course, we age along certain, unavoidable genetic lines that are programmed into our DNA.

All things considered, preventing skin damage is difficult enough on any given afternoon. Over the span of decades, it’s nearly impossible. Starting a preventative Botox routine ASAP can spare you all kinds of grief later on.

How Often Should I Get Botox Injections?

For most patients, we recommend Botox injections every four months. Depending on your current skin health and age, we may recommend an accelerated frequency, but most patients in their 20s and 30s experience real benefits on a 4-month cadence.

When you choose preventative Botox in your 20s, 30s, and 40s rather than corrective Botox in your 50s, 60s, and 70s, you become part of a first-gen beauty experiment. At the moment, we have no idea how youthful preventative Botox users will look after 30 years of treatment.

Throughout the industry, we’ve seen how Botox prevents wrinkles from forming after 10 or 20 years, but those patients started their routines late in life. As such, you could be part of the first wave of beauty enthusiasts who barely seem to age at all.

What Kinds of Wrinkles Can Preventative Botox Treat?

Preventative Botox can delay the same kinds of wrinkles that corrective Botox stalls or softens. By starting your routine today, you could go decades without seeing:

  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines
  • Gummy lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines (11s between eyebrows)
  • Chin lines
  • More

Naturally, this is only a speculative list. Because preventative Botox is so new, we’re not even sure yet of the full list of benefits this new application offers. Discover for yourself how preventative Botox can delay aging by starting your routine today!
